With Rahim Jaffer recently busted, the Calgary Cowbell decided to go down memory lane to revisit a long list of conservative hypocrites. Though these examples are American, conservatives are conservatives.
We found out yesterday that Rahim Jaffer, MP of Edmonton-Strathcona from 1997 to 2008, was busted for drinking and driving. During the search, police found that Jaffer was also in the possession of cocaine.
As we know, Conservatives are always tough on drugs. Jaffer actually ran anti-drug ads targeting the NDP in the 2008 federal election (the one that Jaffer lost to the NDP’s Linda Duncan). Now we know why Jaffer was specifically only targeting drug dealers who sold drugs to children. I am sure Jaffer purchased from an ethical coke dealer who only sells to adults.
Another hypocrite was Ronald Reagan. He and his wife Nancy were the zealous cheerleaders of the ‘Say No To Drugs’ campaign. Of note, Ronald’s daughter, Patti Davis, began using drugs at the age of 14. Patti often accused Nancy Reagan of abusing drugs herself. Ronald Reagan was the crusader for increasing the jail time for people caught with drugs.
Then there are the anti-homosexual hypocrites. Ted Haggard was president of the National Evangelical Association, which has 30 million Christian followers. Haggard was also a spiritual advisor for George W. Bush during his time as president.
Of course Haggard told his flock that homosexuals were evil and was fiercely oppositional to same-sex marriage (click to see video clip). Then in November of 2006 Haggard’s gay prostitute let the cat out the bag when he found out who Haggard was and what his beliefs were. To add insult to injury it was disclosed that the tough on crime Haggard would purchase and use methamphetamines when having sex with his gay prostitute.
In June of 2007, Idaho Senator Larry Craig, on the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association since 1983, was arrested in the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport while trying to pick up a gay prostitute, who just happened to be an undercover police office. Craig voted yes to a ban on same-sex marriage and was given top marks by the Christian Coalition for his pro-family voting record.
Last June, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford told his family and co-workers that he was going hiking on the Appalachian Trail. A father of four young sons, Sanford was gone and didn’t even call on Father’s Day. He really went to Argentina to visit his lover. Sanford was upheld as a family values leader and before getting caught committing adultery was thought of as a future Presidential candidate.
New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was another conservative who was tough on crime. Named Time magazine’s 2002 Crusader of the Year, Spitzer made a name for himself by breaking up two prostitution rings. In March of 2007 Spitzer was caught having sex with a $4,300 a night prostitute.

One of my favourites is Rush Limbaugh. Rush is man who goes on and on about the sanctity of marriage. Of note he has been divorced three times. As Jon Stewart said so brilliantly, this fat man who was addicted to the prescription drugs oxycodone and hydrocodone, preaches self reliance and restraint.
Why does it often seem that the preachers are the biggest sinners? Why are the biggest loud mouth conservatives the biggest hypocrites? I don’t know, but it is fun watching them be exposed for what they are, hypocrites.
