Largest Turnout Ever For Pride Calgary Parade

At Olympic Plaza Liberal leader David Swann spoke. “It is the character of a person, not the sexual orientation,” said Swann. Fellow Liberal MLA Harry Chase followed by saying that the point of Bill 44 was to recognize sexual orientation and for it to be discussed in the classroom.

Police Chief Rick Hansen said that the Calgary Police has a commitment to respect diversity. He noted that a LGBT committee has been created that meets on a regular basis to bring forward issues of concern. “The Calgary Police Service is absolutely committed for the rights of every individual to walk the streets of Calgary without any fear of being harassed,” said Hansen. Hopefully one day this will be realized.
NDP leader Brian Mason noted that one of the first health care services that the Conservative government delisted was gender re-assignment surgery. “They picked that one particularly in order to target people who are transgendered. I think we have to stand up to protect the rights of transgendered people,” said Mason.
Though there were many politicians in attendance, there were no Conservative politicians. Three city councillors were in attendance (Joe Ceci, Druh Farrell, and Brian Pincott). It is disappointing that more politicians do not attend, especially from suburban ridings.

From previous years it was refreshing that there were no protestors. Usually there are religious bigots holding signs with quotes from the bible. On the internet though, organizers did say that an individual was harassing supporters and sponsors of the Pride Calgary. Intolerance does unfortunately still exist in Calgary.
Intolerance still exists in Calgary for men to show affection in public. When you walk the streets in Toronto or Vancouver you see this much more often. It seems Calgarians for the most part only show tolerance to lesbian couples. Many gay men still stay in the closet too.

It was great seeing many faith groups and unions showing their support. This was my favourite t-shirt.

The Raging Grannies were the parade marshalls and sang 'Going to the Chapel, Going to get Married'.

After the guest speakers a giant dance party erupted at Olympic Plaza square. It was fun, colourful, and open. The organizers should be congratulated. Getting that many people out on a long weekend is commendable. If you missed this year’s Pride Calgary parade, make sure you come out next year.
